Andy Irvine was born June 14, 1942 and is a very well known musician on the Irish circuit. He was a founding member of “Planxty”, one of the all time great Irish bands, and is well known for helping popularize the bouzouki and in adapting it to Irish traditional music. It was when he moved to Dublin in the 1960’s that he met Johnny Moynihan and partnered with him in making music, forming “Sweeney’s Men” in 1966. He has also played with Terry Woods of the Irish punk band “The Pogues”. Christy Moore invited Irvine to play with him on his second album, which gave Andy Irvine a wider audience and he became more well known. When they formed “Planxty” Irvine was able to add some of his own compositions to the band’s traditional songs, and became well known as a groundbreaking presence playing the Irish bouzouiki. |
