There are two types of HOPS used in brewing beer
- Aroma HOPS
- Bittering HOPS
Aroma HOPS
are used to give the beer a pleasant aroma and a good finish. The bittering HOPS are used to extract bitterness, the more of these the more bitter the beer will taste. Both kinds of HOPS also act as a preservative. Because of this we have bitter beer styles such as the IPA (India Pale Ale) that was created to keep fluids pure on long sea voyages so the sailors would have fluids that would keep. HOPS are added late in the brewing process, near the end of the boil of the wort. Wort refers the the beer after boiling it but before fermenting and bottling. |
