The bodhran looks like a small hand drum like the picture above. They range from about 25 to about 65 millimeters in diameter and are commonly found in Irish traditional music for rhythm. The technique is much more complicated than simply 'banging a drum' as it involves alot of hand positioning on the inside to get the right sound. I have seen them played very well and very badly in irish sessions. They are said to have been used in the Irish rebellion of 1603 to give a cadence to soldiers and pipers. The name bodhran literally means 'skin tray'. In modern music the Clancy Brothers popularized its use and it became very popular in the 1960's. |
