Irish uilliann pipes are similar to a scottish bagpipe but are inflated by a small set of bellows around the waist and under the right arm instead of blowing into it like a bagpipe. It is a very difficult instrument to play and to master as the piper has to do many things at once. Uilleann pipes sound sweeter and softer than other bagpipes and are the choice of irish pipers today. On my last trip to ireland I was told by a piper that my native California has the largest number of uilleann pipes in the world, presumably because of the cost of the instrument which is enormous. |
