The Irish bouzouki is a stringed instrument with 8 strings (four sets of two) and is very similar to an octave mandolin only slightly larger and commonly used for accompaniment instead of melody like the mandolin. It is often tuned to unison in the lower notes to give it a bit more bass sound for the accompaniment. Traditional bands such as Planxty have popularized it and it is very well known in the traditional circuit. |
